English
This study investigated the temporal dynamics of soil physicochemical properties following a forest fire in the Babakouh series, District 25 of Shenroud Forest, Siahkal County, Guilan Province, Iran. Soil sampling was conducted at 12 and 24 months’ post-fire across a burned area of approximately 10 hectares. Fifteen soil samples were collected from each period at a depth of 0–20 cm, using a uniform distribution pattern, and then pooled into three composite samples per time point. A total of 30 individual samples (resulting in 6 composite samples) were transferred to the laboratory of the Guilan Agricultural and Natural Resources Research Center for analysis. Measured parameters included soil moisture content, apparent specific gravity, soil texture, pH, electrical conductivity (EC), organic carbon (OC), total nitrogen (TN), available phosphorus, and available potassium. Results revealed significant increases (p<0.05) in available potassium (49.94%), total nitrogen (89.18%), and organic carbon (38.78%) between the first and second year post-fire. In contrast, no significant differences were observed in physical properties, including soil moisture, apparent specific gravity, and soil texture (p>0.05). These findings indicate that while soil chemical fertility is substantially altered in the short to medium term, the restoration of chemical fertility to pre-fire levels is a prolonged process requiring more than two years. Therefore, fire prevention remains a critical strategy for preserving forest soil chemical fertility.
