English

The rapid growth of the human population, coupled with the increasing demand for industrial equipment and human needs, has led to problems such as the overexploitation of available resources, as well as land, water, and air pollution. This study investigated the uptake of various heavy metals in two tree species, Eucalyptus camaldulensis D. and Pinus eldarica M., within the vicinity of the Aryan Shimi industrial plant in Mazandaran Province. To assess the concentrations of heavy metals (Zn, Cu, Mn, Cd, Pb, Ni, and As) in the soil and tree leaves, three sampling points were established around the plant, along with one control site. A total of 36 soil samples and 18 leaf samples were collected. The results indicated that the concentration of certain heavy metals in the soil of the control site was higher than that in the soil beneath the afforested area. This difference was more pronounced for Cu (3.76 ppm), Mn (7.1 ppm), Pb (2.84 ppm), and Zn (3.84 ppm) in the control site compared to the afforested soil. Furthermore, a significant difference was observed between the metal concentrations in the leaves of the two studied species. The concentrations of Mn (98.63 ppm), Zn (39.35 ppm), and As (2.1 ppm) in Eucalyptus were considerably higher than those in Pinus, which were 20.75 ppm, 21.38 ppm, and 0.95 ppm, respectively. A comparison of the mean concentrations in the soil samples with those in the leaf samples indicates that the metal concentrations in the leaf samples were higher than those in the soil samples, which reflects the influence of emitted dust and the greater accumulation of pollutants in the studied tree.
