Abstract

The heavy elements are a serious hazard to aquatics as well as human health, as their resistance to degradation and great potential for bio-accumulation in aquatic organisms so this study aimed to evaluate the order and concentration of heavy elements accumulated in edible muscle tissue of Common bream (Abramis brama orientalis) sampled from Siah Darvishan River considered one of the fish species with high economic and ecological value and eventually, assessment its safety status for human consumption purposes. In the present experiment, bio-accumulation of eleven elements (Ni, Se, Fe, Cr, Pb, Zn, Cd, As, Hg, Mn and Cu) in muscle tissue of 30 Common bream captured by cast net from Siah Darvishan River (Guilan province, Iran) were monitored and evaluated using by atomic absorption spectroscopy. The accumulation of investigated elements in muscle tissue have been observed, as follows: Zinc (34.807±2.443), Iron (27.110±2.325), Copper (4.264±0.361), Manganese (2.087±0.073), Selenium (0.843±0.045), Lead (0.821±0.079), Arsenic (0.713±0.025), Cadmium (0.293±0.016), Nickel (0.183±0.015), Chromium (0.151±0.018) and Mercury (0.088±0.005) microgram per gram dry weight, respectively. The obtained results of this study showed that the mean bio-accumulation of all investigated elements in muscle tissue of Common bream; except Manganese, Arsenic, Lead, and Cadmium were at lower level than the Organization (FAO/WHO) considered approved standard. These results indicate the importance of precise attention to the enhancement factors of these elements in the environment of mentioned species.
